Is it safe to turn on my Air Conditioning?

This is a question we have been asked by many of our customers and may well ring true with you. The short answer is yes, it is safe – but there are some things that you need to consider.

The risk around air conditioning is that it is recirculating the same air within a space – so if there isn’t the introduction of fresh air into an office, the air is simply being circulated. This air will become stale and should there be any airborne virus or germs in the office, these will be circulated, possibly spreading them between people.

So, what are the solutions?

Increase your Ventilation.

The introduction of more fresh air is the single best way to improve air quality and reduce the risk of airborne viruses and bacteria. The most reliable way to do this is through a mechanical ventilation system, continually and efficiently supplying your building with the right amount of fresh air.

UV-C technology.

Salix Mechanical Ltd have developed a range of UV-C solutions to be fitted into Air Conditioning and Ventilation systems to effectively eradicate any air-borne germs, virus and odours. See more information online.

UV-C is widely used in the medical field and is the only known way of killing airborne viruses. It works by applying a concentrated Ultraviolet light continually to the air as it passes over the light, breaking down the molecular structure of viruses and rendering them harmless.

UV-C solutions are also of particular benefit where installing a mechanical ventilation system is intrusive or impractical – giving you protection in a situation where you could be otherwise at risk.

Of course, there is not a way to ensure 100% safety in any environment and it is commonly known that viruses such as Covid-19 are spread by contaminated surfaces. But in terms of eliminating the risk of airborne spread, the combination of the right quantity of ventilation and the application of UV-C technology will eliminate 99% of the risk.
