What Is The Difference Between Air Conditioning And Ventilation?

Ventilation is often confused with air conditioning.  Ventilation is the actual cycle of stale air being replaced by fresh air from outside the building, as opposed to air conditioning which simply cools and/or heats the air within a building.  There is a common misconception that the air that is blown out of an air conditioning system is fresh air from outside – this isn’t the case, it is simply recirculated, cooled air.  In the case of a typical ceiling-mounted air conditioning unit, the air is usually drawn up through the centre, cooled and then blown out of the side-facing louvres.

It is perhaps alarming to realise that a lot of offices do not comply with basic ventilation requirements, which puts these environments in the category of a toxic environment, in some cases worse than a badly polluted city centre.  Your ventilation system is an important resource, ensuring your people and equipment can access fresh, filtered air. Without regular, expert maintenance though, your ventilation can stop working effectively – and that can cost your business time and money.

Ventilation can be both natural, through opening windows, or mechanical.  Most large commercial buildings will require mechanical ventilation in order to comply with building regulations.
